HABITAT MANAGEMENT, INC.
Selected Vegetation Sampling Procedures For:
Cyprus Twentymile Coal Company -Area 41
Random Sampling Location
Habitat Management proposes that a systematic random grid be used ]ocate the
sampling points on each sampling area. The systematic grid is used to ensure that
the entire sampling area is represented for cover and production samples. This
method of selecting sampling locations reduces the chance that significant azeas of
the sampling site are entirely missed or overemphasized.
The procedure for sample location within either the reclamation or reference areas is
discussed below.
1. A fixed point of reference that can be located on the map and in the field (such
as a fence corner or road intersection) will be selected for each area. These
fixed points allow the location of a systematic grid in the field. Figures 1 and
2 illustrate the grid design.
2. A systematic grid of the appropriate dimensions (e.g., 400' x 400') will be
selected to provide a minimum of 50 coordinate intersections which could be
used for sample sites on Area 41. The reference area, because of its smaller
size, will use a grid dimension to provide a minimum of 30 coordinate
intersections which could be used for sample sites.
3. Once the grids are developed for each azea, the grids lines will be numbered on
the "X" and "Y" axes to develop a coordinate for each intersection.
4. A scaled representation of the selected grids will be overlain on field maps of
each area and lined up with the point of reference. The sampling grid will be
randomly located on the point of reference as follows. The X and Y coordinate
positioning lines are set at the same length as one grid interval (e.g.,
400'x400'). One random whole number is generated for each coordinate line
within this grid interval length (i.e., between 0 and 400 feet: let x=123' and
y=246'). The grid is aligned with these coordinates and thus the entire grid is
located randomly over the area to be sampled. The grid will be oriented in a
direction which can be easily established in the field and best fits the shape of
the sampling area (Figure 2).
page 1
Habitat Management, Inc.
