Peabody Western Coal Company should be <br />recognized for the diversity and caliber of their reclamation methods. <br />Compliance <br />Two notices of violation were issued at the Seneca ll Mine during 1993. Both problems <br />occurred due to landslides resulting from the extremely wet Spring in northwestern Colorado. <br />Neither notice cited willful non-compliance on the part of the operator. Peabody Western <br />makes a great effort to maintain compliance with the Rules, the Act, and the requirements of <br />their permit. <br />Mini~Reclamation Activities <br />The Seneca iI Mine has been active since the early 1970's. During that time, Peabody <br />Western has developed a number of innovative reclamation practices which have contributed <br />to their achieving success with reclaiming mined lands. The reclaimed areas of the Seneca Il <br />Mine are characterized by a good overall vegetative cover, a diverse community of grasses and <br />(orbs, stable drainage channels, and virtually no erosion. <br />Among the practices contributing to their reclamation success are planting islands and <br />
