General Architectural Description: Structure 1 is the mine manager's residence constructed in 1903. It is <br />a two-story wood frame structure built in the Vctorian Queen Anne style. The main structure measures 30 by 48 <br />feet, oriented northwest to southeast, and hm a steeply pitched composition shingle hip roof with a considerable <br />overhang Chet is supported by decorative wooden breckete. The hip roof is rather unusual for the style oC structure, <br />u ie the long overhang; both may be edaptationa to the snowy climate o[ the area. The building rests on e <br />semicoursed shaped native stone end cement mortar foundation and has ehiplep siding covered by relatively recent <br />asbestos siding. Plain board moldings surround the chore and windows except above the windows where stepped <br />moldings are in place. The main facade oC the structure is the northeast aide. The main entry to the house is <br />located in the center of the elevation wither a recessed entry porch. The porch is accessed by a set oC steps from the <br />north. Both the porch and stairs are enclosed by a railing with square poste and decorative turned balusters. The <br />door has ediamond-shaped window and multiple wooden panels. A transom is above the door and two one over one <br />double hung wood sash windows are adjacent to the leR. The southeast end of the elevation bee been given the <br />appearance oC a bay window 6y having east corner o[ the building beveled and the southeast end of the porch angled <br />at 45 degrees outward. To the right of the porch ie a decorative eroaded window having the aroh divided into three <br />lights with two square panels below. Ornate stepped molding eurrouoda the window end includes scrolls below. <br />Above the firer floor porch is a slight second floor projection flanked 6y one over one windows. The lower portion of <br />the projection ie rounded oo the ends, giving it a balcony appearance, end ie filled with wood stripe in a hemng <br />bone pattern, meeting in the center to Corm a decorative diamond. Above, the projection is squared on the ends end <br />contains two banks of three single light Rxed wood sash windows. The north turner of the structure is incorporated <br />into a round two-story tower with a bellceste conical roof. The ground floor oC the tower contains five one over one <br />double hung wood sash windows, whereas the second floor bee Cour of these windows. Above the second Moor level. <br />the tower is aided in decorative imbricated shingles. Itelienete style breckete support the eaves of the tower roof. <br />At the peak of the roof ie a decorative metal cornice piece. A aide entrance is located to the right of center on the <br />northwest olevation end en exterior brick chimney ie IeR oCcenter. Where the chimney projects through the roof, it <br />ie Ranked by small gabled roof ettechrnente. A group oCthree one over one double hung wood sash windows ere on <br />the southwest end of the elevation with a single one over one window above. Another aide entrance is located in the <br />canter of the southeast elevation. A one over one window ie located to the IeR oC the door end an exterior brick <br />chimney is located to the right. Like the chimney on the northwest elevation, it also has Ranking gable-like <br />attachments. The doorway leads onto en exterior coveted deck that ie a recent addition. Two shed additions have <br />been attached to the southwest aide of the residonce. The eoutheeaternmoet addition ie l2 by 20 feet, oriented <br />northwost to southeast, and is covered with asbestos siding. On the northwest end ie a 20 by 28 foot garago, also <br />orientod northwest to southeast, built on a concrete foundation with sheet metal aiding. Both of Cho additions have <br />sheet metal roofs. Tho garego ie accessed through s large top lining door end a regular door on the northwest aido. <br />The interior still retsina most of the original moldings and chore. The original hardwood Room are still proeent, <br />though covered 6y linoleum end carpeting. The only room that hoe Been anything more then coemotic changes is the <br />kitchon, which bee had new countere and cabinets installed. The remaindor oC the interior is remarkably intact and <br />could be restored to ire original condition with little difficulty. <br />FUNCTION <br />2S.
