mainder of the interior is remarkably intact and could be restored to its original condition with little
difficulty.
Structure 2 -Mine Superinttendent's Residence
The mine superintendent's residence (Structure 2) is a 2'Fi-story Victorian Queen Anne style
woad frame structure that ir~easures 24 by 30 feet, oriented east to west, with a 6-foot-wide shed
addition across the west side. The residence was constructed in 1903 and served in later years as the
mine office. The building is constructed on a semicoursed shaped native stone and cement mortar
Foundation. The ground floor of the structure is covered with narrow clapboard siding with plain
endboards; most of the windows are one-over-one, double hung, wood sash with plain board mold-
ings. The second floor is slightly bell caste and overhangs the first floor slightly; it is covered with
shingle siding. It has a steeply pitched composition shingle hip roof with a gabled projection on the
north end of the west elevation. The gable end is filled with shiplap siding and contains aone-over-
one, double hung window. Tlie eaves of the roof are supported by decorative wooden brackets. Ga-
bled dormers project through. the hip roof on the south and east sides; these are relatively recent
additions to the building. Ari exterior brick chimney is present on the east end of the south eleva-
tion. This has flanking gabled roof attachments where it projects through the hip roof.
The main facade of the structure is on the east side. The main entry to the building is situ-
ated right of center within a recessed porch that is reached by steps from the north. The porch and
steps are enclosed by a railing that has turned posts and balusters. The door is one-light over two
vertical wood panels and has a transom above. To the right of the door, within the porch, is a peaked
two-light fixed window. An identical window is on the north end of the elevation to the right of the
porch. A projecting bay window is present to the left of the entry porch. This contains three one-
over-one, double hung, wood :gash windows with wooden panels below each window. The panels are
filled with vertical tongue and groove siding with that of the central panel in a herringbone pattern
that meet in a central diamond shape. The door and windows on the ground floor of the east eleva-
tion all have stepped moldings above. The entire ground floor level is covered by a shed roof at the
second floor level supported b;y decorative wooden brackets. Two banks of three one-over-one, double
hung, wood sash windows are present in the second floor level.
A rear entry is present on the west end o(the south elevation, within a 9 by 9 foot recessed
corner porch. The floor and ceiling of the porch are covered entirely with beaded tongue and groove
boards. The door within the I~orch has a transom above. A set of wooden steps runs along the west
side of the building leading to a second floor entrance. The wooden steps have been enclosed by a 6-
foot-wide, two-story high shed addition that covers the entire west side of the building. The roof of
the addition has been constricted so that it fits around elements of the original roof, leaving the
original roof intact. Another doorway is through the center of the addition beneath the stairs. In
front of Structure 2, an old air-powered mining drill is on display.
Structures 3 arsd 4 - Resideiatial Cottages
Structures 3 and 4 are small residential cottages, built in 1903, that have been added onto
and joined on their west sides. Both appear to have originally measured 22 by 28 feet, oriented gen-
erally east to west. A series of shed additions on their west sides have extended them an additional
10 feet. Both originally had simple hip roofs through which dormers have been added, making them
both 1'/s stories tall. The roofs. are now covered with sheet metal.
The southernmost of the two cottages, Structure 3, is covered with clapboard siding and has
a main entrance on the north end of the east elevation. A large picture window is to the left of the
door. The structure has a gabled dormer projecting through the center of the east side of the roof. It
has shingle siding and a pair of six-light, fixed wood sash windows. One-over-one, double hung,
wood sash windows are on the east and west ends of the north elevation. An exterior chimney, which
appears to be an addition, is on the east end of the south elevation with aone-over-one window to the
