Nam .
Doc. Date (if no date st p): s'o~~
This letter is to request some further information regarding the subject mining operation located
south of Buena Vista in Chaffee County, Colorado.
I spoke yesterday with Barb Chiappone in your office regarding the history of the permit, and
she suggested I contact you to address further questions and to obtain additional information on
the following:
1. The State database indicates the commodity being mined is AU, or gold. The pit
operator is attempting to sell sand and gravel out of the pit. If the sand and gravel is
a by-product of the gold mining and not a permitted commodity, it is our
understanding that the permit would require modification. If the state permit requires
modification, a new County permit will also be required.
2. We request information regarding surface and ground water protections in place for
the pit. Due to the proximity to the Arkansas River, there are concerns about the
potential for contamination or additional sediment load to the river.
3. Additionally, we are attempting to obtain information regarding pit operations.
Crushing operations are now occurring at the pit, which is not in compliance with
County zoning and land use regulations. Any information regarding operational and
permit history would be appreciated.
We appreciate your assistance in this matter. Please feel free to contact us at 719-539-2218 if
you have any questions or require further information.
Sincerely,
1
on Reimer
County Engineer and Planning Director
cc: Kathy Leinz, County Co-Administrator
