- y
6.5 SEEDING
Seeding should be conducted in late February or early March, Whenever
possible, a grass drill with depth bands and press wheels should be used to
plant the seed. However, in areas inaccessible or unatnenable to a drill
seeder, the seed should be broadcast at twice the drilled rate followed by
covering with a harrow. The seed should be covered with soil to a depth of
1/4 to 3/4 inch. The species to be seeded and seeding rates are listed below.
These species were selected in conjunction with Soil Conservation Service
reco~nnendations based on compatibility to climate, surrounding vegetation, and
soils.
SEED MIXTURE
PERCENT
OF DRILLED RATE
SPECIES ORIGIN MIXTURE lbs PLS/acre
Western Wheatgrass Native 50 16
Galleta Native 50 12
Note: Double the rate when broadcasting.
6.6 SLOPE RECLAMATION
The north and south slopes of the landfill are considered critical areas
in terms of potential erosion. In order to assure the initial establishment
of vegetation on these slopes, the recommendations of the preceding sections
should be followed closely. In addition, we recommend the use of fertilizer
and supplemental irrigation on these slopes during the first 2 years after
seeding (see Section b.3). Although the irrigation will be expensive, it is
our opinion that the establishment of vegetation on these slopes is the most
economical and practical way of preventing erosion of the soil topcover.
