It regards a specific gravel pit
operation in Chaffee County about one and a half miles north of Buena Vista This pit is
presently owned by Fred Baldwin of Hardrock Paving and Redi-Mix Company. His
phone is 866-589-6832 or 719-395-2222. It has been operated in the past by John Ary of
Fremont Paving, P.O. Box 841, Canon City, CO., 81212. His phone is 719-275-4555.
To the best of my knowledge the state pemut was granted in 1977, permit # 1977-196
and is designated as Section 30, 14N, lE, and located on County Road 383. 'This may not
be accurate as the person helping me find this had great difficulties determining if this
was indeed this particular gravel pit. The permit account was reopened in 2003 and has
been very active during the first part of 2007.
We and our neighbors to the south and north of us are respectfully requesting that this
permit not be allowed to continue and that all operations of this gravel pit be terminated.
We request this because of the extreme amount of dust that has been directly assaulting
our homes when the wind blows, which is constantly and daily in this area. There were
many hours when we thought we were in another Eastern Plains Dust Bowl of the 1930's.
It is not possible to open a single window, and the dust actually seeps in through closed
windows and permeates the air, and worse still, it is not possible to go outside during
these dust attacks. In addition, when the operation is active our entire house `Mumbles"
and the integrity of our foundation may be being compromised.
