iii iiiiiiiiuiii iii
Coal View'Ghost Ranch
So named because of a Ghost (or Ghosts) which we saw one.
dark~night years ago. It was a clear dark night at about
' 1966 that the Ghost first made itself known to us. Allie
and I were standing on the north bank of the Yampa River and
we saw a light appear near the old house across the river.
It started dancing slowly from side to side and np and down
as it moved slowly toward us. The light was as a di_m
sparkler flashing on and off. as it moved over the water,
staying 3' above it. The light turned up river, when it
reached the center, finally disappearing from view.
We stood on the hank a few minutes longer contemplating
the light. 2 surmised that it could he car lights on US 40,
reflecting from rocks on the cliffs. Al]ie of. course
pointed out that there were no cars. As we walked slowly
back about 50' we stopped to look at the stars and
considered the light. A few moments later we noticed it
coming back down the river. When the flashing, bobbing,
weaving light reached the point where it had turned before,
it turned and came towards us again. Now Al.lie is not a
fast runner, but had I started running toward our trailer,
I'm sure I'd have lost the race. we both stood our ground,
why? Probably because we couldn't move. Anvwav the dancing
dim flasher light reached the river bank rising as it did
so. We still stood our ground. As .it moved toward us we
tried to see what it was. We saw no .form of any kind, only
a dim sparkler-like light flashing on and off. When the
light got within about ZO' of us, it turned and went up the
trail, disappearing from our view.
Al.lie saw the Ghost (or whatever) again several years
later 1/2 mile down river on the old abandoned I1S 40 road.
The Ghost acted the same way. It scared our dog Daisey whc
ran under the trailer. Allie tried to see more of the Ghost
by manning to get a flashlight (she said), but the batteries
would not work. Some excuse!
The Ghost was again seen this past summer (1A88) by Ron
and Laura Stevenson, persons who are Living in a trailer.
parked next to the last house of Old Rear River. Oh yes,
the Ghost Town of Coal View is approximately 1 1/2 miles up
the canyon w)iere Allie and I first saw the Ghost.

If anyone desires to know more or has any theories on
the Ghost of Coal View Ranch, please write or call.
•TOhn A.
