These
gently sloping to steep soils are m uplands in Ne
northern part of the Area. Slopes are 1 to 40 per
cent. The vegetation is short and tall grasses.
Elevations are 5,500 to 6,800 feet. Annual pxeipi-
tation is 15 to 19 inches. Mean annual soil teaQsr-
ature is 47' to SO' F., and Ne front-free seaam
is 120 to 135 days.
In • representative profile Ne surface layer,
about 7 inches Viet, is dark grayish-brown clay
loam. The upper part of the subsoil, about 21
inrhes Nick, is brown, grayish-brown, and light
yellowish-brown clay. The lower part of Ne subsoil
is very strongly calcareous sandy clay loam. The
~mderlying material is a buried soil Nat is brom
and reddish-yellow sandy clay loam. It extends to
a depN of 60 inches or mox, is very strongly ul-
eaxous, and contains streaks of lir 2 to 6
inches ride.
Fondis soils have slow permeability. Available
rater capacity is high. Plants can penetrate to a
depN of 60 inches or sore, except rhere bedrock is
at a depN of about 40 inches or bela+.
Most axes of Fondis soils ax in native grasses
and used for grazing livestock. Game of Ne.less
sloping areas an dryfarmed.
Fondis ela loam Ito 3 ereent al es (FoB).--
This gently sloptng sotl is on tablelan and up-
lands in the northern part of Ne Area. Most mapped
areas are irregularly shaped and 20 to 100 acxs in
size.
Included with this soil in mapping ax small
areas of Fondis clay loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes,
[catch clay loam, 4 to 8 percent slopes, and Buick-
gatanta looms, 3~to 9 percent slopes. Also included
are small rock outcrops and • few lakes Nat fors
/caring periods of intensive amounts of rainfall.
Runoff is aKdian. The hazard of erosion is
slight to moderate. A few gullies ax in drainage-
rays.
lost areas of this soil are cultivated and are
used to grow wheat, barley, and oats. (Capability
unit IIIc-1, dryland; lie-1, irrigated; Clayey
Foothill range site)
Fondis clay loam, 3 to ~rcent slopes (FOD).--
This sloping soil is on uplands zn t~~e northern
part of the Area. Most mapped areas are irregularly
shaped and range from 40 to 600 acres in size.
Included with this soil in napping sx small
areas of Kutch clay loam, 4 tc 8 percent slopes,
Englerood clay loam, and Denver clay loam, 5 to 12
percent slopes. Also included are ^ few rock out-
exops less Nan a quarter acre in size.
Runoff is median. Thc hazard of erosion is aoder-
ate. Gullies are on some of Ne larger drainagerays
mot protected by grass.
Most atess of this soil are cultivated and ax
used to grow small grains, mainly wheat. A few
axes ax in native pasture and are used for grazing
1lvestxk. (Capability unit Iva-3, dryland; IYe-1,
irrigated; Clayey Foothill range site)
Fondis-Kutch association (S to 40 pexent slopes)
(Fu).--This association is about 50 percent Fondis
loam and about 35 percent Kutch sandy loam. These
strongly sloping to steep soils are on uplands in
Ne northern part of the Area. In atypical area
Ne Fondis soils are at higher elevations than the
[catch soils.
The Fondis soil has a profile similar to that de-
scribed as representative for the series, but Ne
surface layer, about 4 inches thick, is loam. Shale
or sandstone is at a depth of 40 inches or more.
The Newlin soil has a profile similar to that de-
scribed as representative for the series, but it hu
a surface layer of sandy loam 3 to 4 inches thick.
Included with these soils in mapping are area of
Newlin gravelly sandy loam, 8 to 30 percent slopes,
~ Bresser sandy loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes. Also
included are a few small areas of Nilly gravelly
land that are less than 5 acres in size and a few
cliffs that are about 30 to 40 feet high. Taken
together Nese areas make up about 15 percent of
each napped area.
Runoff is aedian to rapid. The emsion hazard is
moderate to seven. In many places wall slips, or
"catsteps," 6 to 12 inches high are present where
slopes exceed 9 percent. Gullies and headcuts are
present along drainageways.
These areas are used for grazing livestock and
for rildlife habitat.
