Lung
Division DneUOr
Please find an enclosed proposal for bid document prepared by the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology. After conducting inspections on the Grassy Gap Mine property during 1998 and early 1999,
the Division has identified several additional maintenance items that the Division will conduct repairs
on. The proposed bid document describes the scope of work that will be conducted.
To summarize, the Division plans to have the riser and primary discharge culvert of Pond 4 repaired.
Presently water from the pond appears to be piping around the culvert. This is the pond which is located
immediately upslope from an unstable landslide. While the pond does not appear to be the cause of the
slide, as the slide extends several hundred feet north and south of the pond location, the Division
chooses to repair the pond to avoid contributing additional water onto the slide. The embankment will
be sealed around the discharge pipe with bentonite and concrete and the riser will be reduced in height to
lower the volume of water potentially held in the pond. Additional bentonite will be added to the
bottom of the pond to reduce seepage through the bottom of the pond.
The inside corner of the switchback on pit 4 road will be repaired with rock armoring and directing road
drainage away from this comer. The spring drainage that cuts across the pit 2/3 access road will be
redirected off the roadway.
I had left a message on your voice mail on May 7, 1999 regarding the Division placing two signs at the
entrance to the mine property identifying the site as a reclaimed coal mine, with the Division as contact
should there be concerns with the reclamation. The signs are approximately two feet by three feet and
will be moLlnted on one 4"x 4" post. We would expect to place one along the main road to pits 5 and 6
south of the oil well. The other would be placed along the road to pit 4 south of the switchback.. We
hope to schedule the maintenance work the week of June 28, 1999. if Cross Mountain Ranch has any
concerns with the placement of these signs or with the proposed bid document, please call me.
,~ \
Sincerely,. ; :.
I_
Jan~jC~H.
