The legal location of the project is TBS, R66W, SW;f and SE~f, 6)W~,
Sec. 27; S'~, S~'e, Sec. 28; SE'k, SW~.f, Sec. 29. Figure 1 shows the
general location of the project. Figure 2 shows the project
location on the Castle Rock South 7.5 Minute Topographic
Quadrangle. Figures 3 and 4 show the project on the Centennial
Materials orthophoto map, 1 in = 500 feet. Overview photos of the
area are shown on figures 5 and 6.
SIELD INVESTIGATIONS
The cultural resources inventory was conducted over six days,
January 19, 26, and 27, February 27, and March 5 and 12, by Judi.
Halasi. Mr. Jim Barrett assisted in the field by showing the
' project location and by flagging and staking area boundaries and
the road alignments.
BACKGROIIND
The following gives a brief summary of the environment,
prehistory, history, and review of previous cultural resources in
the project area.
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry is in a transition area
between the Front Range Mountains of central Colorado and the
High Plains of eastern Colorado. This area is within the
Colorado Piedmont of the Great Plains Province (Fenneman 1931).
The Colorado Piedmont lies between the South Platte River on the
north and the Arkansas River on the south. A high divide,
extending eastward from Palmer Lake, separates the drainage
system of the South Platte from the drainage system of the
Arkansas River. Both of these river systems have cut deeply into
the Tertiary (65 to 2 m.y. old) sedimentary rock and removed much
sediment. The major tributary that drains the project area is
Cherry Creek, which is in the primary drainage system of the
South Platte stream system. Cherry Creek lies northwest of the
project area, and Willow Creek, an intermittent drainage into
Cherry Creek, is at the west end of the project area. Cherry
Creek is fed by intermittent streams and numerous springs.
Erosion is active these drainages.
The flat-lying Dawson arkose is the predominant outcrop on the
' Platte-Arkansas divide between Denver and Colorado Springs and
occupies the greater part of the Castle Rock quadrangle.
Although it had a wider distribution, this soft formation has
been extensively eroded elsewhere. The Castle Rock conglomerate
outcrops in areas of the divide between tributaries of the South
Platte River from the vicinity of Elbert to Sedalia. A large
part of the Castle Rock conglomerate lies in the Castle Rock
quadrangle where it caps the upland
These two geological
.
