L
The results of this survey appears to follow a similar pattern of
site location selection observed in the Parker survey.
The historic sites in the project area all date from the
homestead period in the region, 1B60s to 1880s. The stone
quarry, livestock fences, and livestock maintenance features
relate to ranching and homestead activities on the Kastler
homestead, which later became part of one larger ranch, the
Winkler Ranch. The original Engl Ranch was one of the earliest
ranches in the area. Early historic events on the Engl Ranch
have local significance in the history of the area. In addition,
the Engl Ranch was one of most successful ranches in the area.
This ranch was expanded and continues today, as the Winkler
Ranch, to be a successful and significant ranch in the area. The
Engl Ranch and the Winkler Ranch may therefore be significant to
the State Register of Historic Places and the National Register
of Historic Places. The entire ranch complex needs to be
evaluated for significance. The resources identified here were
not part of the original Engl Ranch but were later acquired as
part of the Winkler Ranch. These resources, which are not
significant as individual resources, may be part of a significant
ranch complex.

1

~~

r.~

21
!.J
