1
`~ Grass was predominantly buffalo grass and cheat grass. Ground
visibility was generally very good, about 90 to 70$. At the mesa
edge were occasional small bushes and ponderosa pine, and
occasional stands of scrub oak. The canyons had a denser scrub
community with ponderosa pine, scrub oak, and other low shrubs.
The soil depth varied from very shallow at the mesa edge where
bedrock outcrops were often apparent, to much deeper (higher) at
the mesa top, creating a curved profile or "mounding" across the
mesa top between the eroded canyons.
1 SQRVrY R&SDLTS
The archaeological survey of the Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry
identified two prehistoric sites, three historic sites, and two
prehistoric isolated artifacts.
5DA1056
Site 5DA1056 consists of a ground stone scatter at the head of a
small intermittent drainage. The site sits on the bedrock rim of
the small escarpment, about 2 m deep, which forms the head of the
intermittent drainage. The configuration of the drainage head
suggests a seasonal spring at this location, although no water
was in the drainage at the time of the site visit. The six
artifacts were found in a 10- by 5.5-m area. Artifact 6 is a
complete milling stone, which has one convex grinding surface on
a large cobble with minimal shaping. Two handstones, artifacts 2
and 6, were on the site, each has one use surface. The remaining
artifacts are small fragments of milling stones, each with one
grinding surface. All artifacts were found on the surface. The
site displays no potential for additional depth.
' SDA1057
SDA1057 is a small lithic quarry. The site has two small outcrops
of lithic material, which weathers into small fractured pieces.
The lithic material is a variety of Wall Mountain Tuff. The color
of the stone varies from brownish purple to a pale pink. These
colors are identified in the GSA Rock Color Chart as pale red {5
R 6/2) to a lighter shade of pale red (10 R 6/2). This material
is more dense and more crystalline than the Wall Mountain Tuff at
the historic quarry, SDA1058, and the other outcrops along the
mesa edges. It has a chert-like texture which is better for
lithics than the other grades of Wall Mountain Tuff. No other
outcrops of this material were seen in the survey. Only three
pieces of this material at the site were identified as culturally
modified. Most of the material was unmodified. The site area
including the few artifacts, the two outcrops, and the associated
surface scatter of the stone is 19 by 10 meters. The site has no
potential for buried surface deposits.
16
