<br />Ms. Jean Olson - 3 - June 1, 1989 <br />In your particular situation, if your well is tapping an aquifer which is <br />continuous between the mine and your home, this would mean that a plume of <br />saline water might reach your home between 227 and 6880 years from now. <br />Furthermore, groundwater travel of that duration would result in significant <br />lowering of salt levels by dilution and from adsorption by the rock. <br />We have jurisdiction to require Peabody to predict, quantify, minimize and <br />mitigate damage to water resources, and we intend to see that these things <br />are done. We cannot require Peabody to sign any kind of an agreement with <br />you concerning those wells. <br />I hope this letter clarifies for you the Division's position on these <br />matters.
