Mr. Gomez stated that citizens have
contacted him about doing a study of the Rito Seco drainage basin
and their belief that the mine is causing the major sedimentation
problems in the areas. He stated the SCS could only do ~~ study if
it was requested by the mine, local landowners or perhaps the
county commissioners. This is somewhat different than what I was
told by the citizens.
We then discussed the sedimentation issue. Mr. Gomez stated that
a study was conducted in the 1970s, and it showed excessive
sedimentation in the drainage basin before the mine b=_gan. He
believes the major contributors are the poor range conditions and
county roads in the area, and the previous study demonstr~Ltes this.
I asked if he felt the mine was a major contributor and tie said he
did not think it was, the mine may be contributing a minor amount,
but it is not a major problem.
He is willing to do additional work in the area, if he receives a
request. I told him we would contact the mine to see if they were
interested in requesting an area-wide study, and that it would be
voluntary on their part. In addition, I told him we were
monitoring their sediment control system on a routine basis and
requiring them to constantly minimize any offsite sedimentation.
