Townsend
Montrose, CO 81401
We have received your request, on behalf of VALCO, Gunnison Concrete Division,
fora wildlife statement necessary for their Mined Land Reclamation application.
In order to expedite the procedure, we recently stopped by the VALCO Gunnison
office to obtain additional information on current and future operation plans.
IJe currently have some concerns involving illegal 404 activities which VALCO
had done recently at the project site. We discussed our concerns with Mr. Earl
Brubaker, owner, hoping to work out these Droblems. IJe were informed by Mr.
Brubaker that you handle all planning and applications for him and that we
should contact you.
In order for our Division to evaluate the impacts of the Vader and Rozman Pits
on wildlife, we need to know what the future operating plans will be. We, there-
fore, would like to have a field meeting with you to discuss the long term plans
and work which was illegally done on the Vader Pit in an attempt to rechannel
Torlichi Creek. Since Mr. Brubaker indicated that he had no future needs for
gravel from the Vader Pit until next year, I assume that there is no big rush to
obtain the Mined Land Reclamation Permit.
With the Colorado big game huntinn seasons underway, our field people are extremely
busy until November 11. Please contact me after this date and we will make arrange-
ments to meet with you in the field to discuss operating plans and current 404
violations, so that we can provide necessary information as required by the Mined
Land Reclamation Board, I can be contacted at our Montrose office, phone 249-3431.
lde will look forward to meeting with you to work out our current concerns.
Sincerely,
~ ~~~
Rick Sherman
Wildlife Biologist
RS:m9
cc: Bob Clark
Dick Imler
Jim Houston /
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Army Corps of Engineers
•
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Monte Pascoe, E.ecutive Director • WILDLIFE COMMISSION,Wilbur Redden, Chairman
Donald Fernandez, Vice Chairman • James Smith, Secretary • Jean K.
