March 11, 1994
To Whom It May Concern,
This is to certify that I know of and saw the irrigation
ditch, roads, trail a' and general terrain on what is now the Coal
View Ghost Ranch. It is much different now than when I viewed it
at various times years ago. I was born in Bear River. I used to
catch perch out of the pond (1'-7'deep) that was fed by the water
from the mine shaft located across the tracks from the mine
office trailer.
The irrigation ditch began up river from where the coal
loadout cable used to cross the river approx 300' up river from
sun coal stocking point on the east side of the Yampa river. It
then ran out to the point about where the small but is now
between the underground tube and the bridge tube. It then turned
back south passing behind the present pond and transformer poles,
proceeding close along the bank. It then proceeded between the
bank and the old river bed to the next meadow.
The old river bed was filled about 1963 with dirt from the
steep high bank which was located just north of the group of
trees below the transformer near the present shop area.
The bench at the upper Coal View mine was approx 200'
square. This was the location for the shop and steam boiler for
the mine. Cables ran from this point down to the bottom of the
canyon near the house in Coal View.
The forgoing is submitted freely and without pay of any kind
and I will swear under oath in any court of law that all
statements are true.
S~~ ~OC~
Tom Smith
PO BOX 814
693 Rose ST
Craig, CO 81625
(303) 824-3483
My Cor~m;ssion Esoir~s Oct.
