• T"he following lists the parameters sampled, sampling methodologies, and sampling intensity for the
revegetation monitoring program.
Sampling Parameters
Cover. Cover data includes "fast-hit" and "all-hit" cover by species (both absolute and relative
values), total vegetation cover and cover values for litter, rock, and baze ground. If present, covet by
mosses and lichens axe also tallied.
Production: Production data is collected as total current yeaz's herbaceous standing crop biomass. In
sampling for bond release, harvested biomass is separated by life form. Shmb or tree production is
not to be sampled. Values aze expressed as gm per 0.5 squaze meter and Ibs/ac, oven-dry weight.
Woody Plant Density: The density of shrubs and trees is sampled in reclaimed azeas. Concentrated
shrub and tree planting azeas aze delineated and sampled separately from the general reclamation.
Values are presented as stems per 100 square meter and stems per acre.
Species List: A list of all plant speaes observed during sampling is developed.
Species Density: A measure of the number of species per 100 squaze meters determined at the cover
sampling locations is developed and refereed to as "spedes Density."
IY. SUMMARY
• All pit/mining areas have been backfilled and regraded (674 acres). Remaining azeas consist of
• roads (ten~inry and perntanent) and andllary facilities (172 acres).
• During 2006 (rince end of minim
- 193 acres have been backfilled and graded
- 142 acres have been topsoiled
- 177 acres have been seeded
• 2005 vegetation monitoring results (on azeas reclaited in 2001 and 2003) show the revegetation
attempts have been successful with an average production of 7,884 16 per acre oven-dry weight.
The requirement for Phase III bond release is 1,2501b per acre.
• The overall woody plant density (stems/acre) is still low, however the comparison between 2001
(101.2) and 2003 (36.4) reclaimed areas shows a significant upward trend The permit
requitement is 200 stems per acre for Phase III bond release.
• The spedes density averages 27.4 species per 100 sq. meters. The spedes density is very similar
to the results collected from the undisturbed reference azeas.
• Over 86,000 trees and shrubs have been planted to date at the Yoast Mine in fenced and
unfenced plots. 54,600 trees and shrubs were planted in 2006
•
Yoart Mine - 2006 Reclamation Award Nomination page 4
