iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
999
Don't limit access to the Somerset cemetery
Dear Editor:
At issue is the request b}' Som-
erset Coal Co. to reclassify an
access road to a haul road. On
April 7, the Gunnison County
Commissioners and Planning
Board conducted a joint public
hearing on this mauer.
The following petition was
signed by over 30 citizens of the
North Fork Valley:
"Wc the undersigned, as resi-
dents of Somerset and/or other
users of the Somerset Cemetery,
wish to go on record s-ith the
county commissioners of Gunnison
County. We oppose the proposal to
reclassify an access road to a haul
road.
This is the only access available
to the cemetery. We want to insure
that all peoples have this freedom
oC access at any time of their
choosing."
This petition was presented to
the Gunnison County Commission-
ers at the public hearing April 7.
I'm certain more signatures
would have been obtained if there
had been more time and a legal
description (showing probable
usage restrictions) had bccn made
available.
Six Icttcrs, in support of this
reclassification, were made a part
of the record at this hearing. Letters
were from two banks., one town
mayor, one city chamber of com-
trtcrcc, one ncigltboring county
board of commissioners and one
individual. I would hope, once all
the facts are known, the individuals
responsible for these Icttcrs would
reconsider their unconditional posi-
tion.
I feel I must respond to one
paragraph written by the individu-
al, rlillard S. Fairlamb. Quote: "]is
time the malcontents, tree huggers
and fish kissers Icft the law-abiding
citizens who want to work fora liv-
ing dojust exactly that."
At First, I was upset about being
called a "tree hugger and kiss fish-
er." But after thinking about it, I
decided I liked the idea of being
considered an individual who has a
healthy respect for nature.
Many a United States citizen
has bccn overjoyed at the chance to
kiss the soil and embrace the beau-
ty of this land after having all tltcir
rights taken away from them while
being held captive.
Earl B. ISurn's
Somerset
