MCC provides the
following additional comments concerning the Division's item number two of the Auguri 9, 1996
letter.
The conclusions of the Daman and Moore report of 1993 titled "I-andshde investigation Report,
Jumbo Mountain, Somerset, Colorado", are supported by reon ground observations of the area by _
MCC and Dames and Moore (see page 3 of the Dames and Moore report, labeled Drawing No. 1, `
titled "Plan of Jumbo Mountain Landslide"). Dames and Moore concluded in 1993 that:
historically, Were has been landslide activity in We area, and smaller scale, active landslides are
occurring on steeper parts of the old landslide mass; Were movements are likely to continue wiW or
without mining, particularly during spring snowmelt; however, subsidence from longwall mining
may lead to surface cracking, which may be difficult to distinguish from cracking due to landslide
movement
During We inspection of the Mautz property on August 27, 1996, Mr. Jim Pendleton of your office
slated that We conclusions of the Dames and Moore report of 1993 were essentially accurate. MCC
agrees wiW Mr. Pendleton and We Dames and Moore report that We cracks observed during We
inspection are primarily related to landslide activity, wiW We possibility of some influence from
mining related subsidence. The ground observations of recent weeks by MCC and Dames and
Moore also substantiate We current permit predictions (see page 2.05-107) regarding subsidence.
Sincerely, t`'~.pv/~J/
Norm~~E ry ~ ~ v
Project Engincer
ce: Phil Schmidt
Christine Johnston
KaWy Welt
