Long <br />Telluride, CO 81435 Diri.inn Director <br />RE: Requested Information, Alexander Pit, Permit No. M-76-032 <br />Dear Mr. Knox: <br />Thank you for your written inquiry, dated 4/7/97, regarding status of the Alexander Pit. <br />The Alexander Pit, DMG permit M-76-032, is an active mining operation. Alexander Pit is <br />located approximately 5 miles west of Telluride, near the confluence of South Fork and <br />San Miguel Rivers. The operation is approved for 32.7 acres affected area, in portions of <br />the SE 1 /4 of the NW 1 /4, and S 1 /2 of the NE 1 /4, and N 1 /2 of the SE 1 /4, and NE 1 /4 <br />of the SW 1 /4 of Section 31, and portions of the SW 1 /4 of the NW 1 /4 of Section 32, <br />both Sections located in T43N, R9W, NMPM, San Miguel County. <br />The operation is approved for excavation of construction materials and processing of <br />materials, to include sorting, crushing, washing, stockpiling, and production of concrete <br />and asphalt. Colorado reclamation statutes and permit conditions for the Alexander Pit, <br />do not require that on-site processing be limited to materials excavated on-site. <br />Therefore, importation of materials for on-site processing does not violate Alexander Pit <br />permit conditions or the law. <br />The original DMG permit for the Alexander Pit was issued on 6/17/77, to Nielsons, Inc., <br />for 14 acres affected area. On 2/25/82, DMG approved Transfer of Permit and <br />Succession of Operator //1 (SO-01), for Animas Aggregates, Inc. as successor operator. <br />On 2/26/86, DMG approved Amendment #1 (AM-011, increasing affected area to the <br />current 32.7 acres. On 5/22/90, DMG approved SO-02, for Telluride Gravel, Inc. as <br />successor operator. On 6/28/93, DMG approved Technical Revision #1 ITR-011, <br />addressing fuel containment structure, operations in old placer tailings area, sediment <br />control structures, and intermittently active status. On 3/15/94, DMG approved TR-02, <br />addressing oil and antifreeze containment facility. On 3/15/94, DMG approved TR-03, <br />addressing replacement of office trailer and installation of concrete foundation for new <br />trailer. DMG records do not indicate additional modifications to the permit. <br />
