RE: Requested Information, Alexander Pit, Permit No. M-76-032
Dear Mr. Knox:
Thank you for your written inquiry, dated 4/7/97, regarding status of the Alexander Pit.
The Alexander Pit, DMG permit M-76-032, is an active mining operation. Alexander Pit is
located approximately 5 miles west of Telluride, near the confluence of South Fork and
San Miguel Rivers. The operation is approved for 32.7 acres affected area, in portions of
the SE 1 /4 of the NW 1 /4, and S 1 /2 of the NE 1 /4, and N 1 /2 of the SE 1 /4, and NE 1 /4
of the SW 1 /4 of Section 31, and portions of the SW 1 /4 of the NW 1 /4 of Section 32,
both Sections located in T43N, R9W, NMPM, San Miguel County.
The operation is approved for excavation of construction materials and processing of
materials, to include sorting, crushing, washing, stockpiling, and production of concrete
and asphalt. Colorado reclamation statutes and permit conditions for the Alexander Pit,
do not require that on-site processing be limited to materials excavated on-site.
Therefore, importation of materials for on-site processing does not violate Alexander Pit
permit conditions or the law.
for 14 acres affected area. On 2/25/82, DMG approved Transfer of Permit and
Succession of Operator //1 (SO-01), for Animas Aggregates, Inc. as successor operator.
On 2/26/86, DMG approved Amendment #1 (AM-011, increasing affected area to the
current 32.7 acres. On 5/22/90, DMG approved SO-02, for Telluride Gravel, Inc. as
successor operator. On 6/28/93, DMG approved Technical Revision #1 ITR-011,
addressing fuel containment structure, operations in old placer tailings area, sediment
control structures, and intermittently active status. On 3/15/94, DMG approved TR-02,
addressing oil and antifreeze containment facility. On 3/15/94, DMG approved TR-03,
