Dept. of r:ahiral Flesource~
This letter is written pursuant to CMLR Rule 4.30.1 to formally notify
you of the continuing status of temporary cessation of operations
currently in effect at Dorchester's Fruita property. The present disturbance
at the Fruita site is situated entirely on Fee land (surface and coal) and
consists of two mine benches, roads, sediment ponds, topsoil stockpiles
and other associated minor disturbances described under the existing permit
and revisions thereto. The total included in the area of disturbances
encompasses 47 acres, with approximately 10-15 acres actually disturbed.
Subsurface development includes three entries driven a{Iproximately 1,000
feet into the Cameo Seam and five entries driven approximately 600 feet
into the lower Anchor Seain. All of the currently disturbed land and
underground development work will be utilized for future commercial
development of the property and, therefore, will not bE~ subject to reclamation
activities during the temporary cessation period. On-going environmental
baseline data gathering activities will be conducted on the Fee land as well
as the surrounding BLM land in preparation for the larye scale commercial
operation permit. '
In addition to the environmental baseline program, routine security, maintenance
and monitoring activities will be continued at the Fru':ta property. As you
know, Dorchester is in the process of completing temporary air seals on the
three Cameo entries to control spontaneous combustion. No additional work
iS contemplated at this time.
The current cessation of operations has been the resuli of the depressed
economy and resultant lack of markets for coal. Given these circumstances
it is difficult to anticipate a date for the resumption of operations.
However, we will continue the permitting process for large scale operations
:\ Cuhcidun of Drnrho.h•i (~a. f', •i l`ornlinn
