Harry Ranney
May 29, 2003
Page 4
The null hypothesis being tested is that the bond release block mean (u) is greater than or equal to
90% of the standard (H°: u > Q). If k is Iess than or equal to the 1-tailed t table value for alpha error
probability of .10 at the appropriate degrees of freedom, then H° is not rejected, and revegetation is
deemed successful for the parameter tested.
Species Diversity
The diversity ofplant species present in the Dryland Reference Area and the two reclaimed areas will
be evaluated using data on vegetative ground cover acquired from the point-intercept transects. An
evaluation of species diversity will be derived from data acquired during the June and August
sampling events. Data from the transects will be analyzed by implementing Equation 4 to calculate
the relative cover of each species detected.
(4)
Relative Cover of Species X = ° ~ Cover of Species X
/o Total Vegetative Cover
Post-mining success ofspecies diversitywitl be evaluated bycomparing the relative cover values of
the reclaimed areas with the values ascertained within the reference area vegetation community. The
species diversity standard for the two reclaimed dryland sample units is the establishment of two
cool-season grasses, one warm-season grass, and one perennial forb, each with a relative cover value
between 3 and 60 percent. There is no cover requirement for shrub species.
Kaiser will submit data obtained during the 2003 sampling event in the fall of 2003.
We plan to conduct sampling for vegetative ground cover, herbaceous production, and species
diversity on June 16 through June 19, 2003.Additionally, we plan to sample for vegetative ground
cover and species diversity on August 4 through August 7, 2003, which is near the peak growing
season for warm-season grasses. Three maps that display the planned sample locations for the three
sample areas are attached to the end of this study plan. If you have any questions or need additional
information on our scope of work, please call me at (303) 850-0930. We welcome all comments
from the CDMG.
Sjpcerel ,_ /,~~
huck Florian
Staff Ecologist
