Due to the s~mitar nature and close proximity of the proposals, they \vill be <br />~:.. ;~~lyzed in one Environmental assessment report. <br />:• <br />-re operations are located or, unpatented lode mining claims that produce amazonite <br />lnd smokey quartz. The proposed mining operations are located in the Crystal Creek <br />lrea approximately slx miles north of Lake George, Colorado. See table ar.d map for <br />sFecific claim torations. The operation involves three separate claimants. This project <br />~s proposed to begin in the summer c' 2000. The proposed operation could continue (or <br />('ve years. at which point the operatior, may be extended for an additional five years <br />.rough a Forest Service approval of a modified plan of operations The operator has <br />been approved to conduct crystal mining in this area since 1993. <br />'he claimant's proposal includes <br />• Hand tools and heavy equipment would be used to prospect and extract minerals <br />from the unpatented mining claims. Heavy equipment would be limited to up to <br />60 eight-hour days per season (May-November) for Glacier Peak and Crystal <br />Jack mining operations. See table for proposed disturbance size per operation. <br />• Individual open pits and'or trenches would be fenced or flagged for public and <br />vnldlife safety. <br />• Vehicle travel would mostly be limited to existing system and non-system roads. <br />Motorized travel off existing roads would be restricted to a track hoe excavator to <br />access dig rtes. In order to m~nimtze disturbance, frequency of off-road travel <br />would be IimRed to start and finish of mechanical work. <br />• New road construction is requested for appraximatelyone-half mile to access the <br />northern mast claims and one-halt mile to access Take-Five. Forest Service <br />preferred routes will be examined as alternatives in the report and mitigation <br />measures such as culverts and erosion control wil' be reviewed. <br />• Trees would only be removed when unavoidable for mining operations.
