IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~ Received
AU6 2 4 1995
MINED LAND WILDLIFE STATEMENT
Durango Field Office
Divlsbn of Minerals 6 Geology
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by the Land Reclamation
Board in their consideration of a mining permit for: `~ ~NE
MINE NAME AND DESCRIPTION -`~IANG, O DENVER
SMITHCOPIT nP~~~~2Zp ONCE
The Colorado Division of Wildlife does hereby m , to the best of our knowledge, that the
impact of the proposed mining operation on wildlife will be
CATEGORY (minor moderate, major)
Mine Location: T32N R2E SEC. 9
Wildlife Species List:
mule deer, elk, small game and non-game mammals and birds, waterfowl species
Endangered Species Impacted:
bald eagles
Assessment of Impact on Wildlife:
There will be displacement of small mammals and birds presently living on site, which could impact
predators dependent on small prey. Reclamation of the site will provide restored habitat. There will
be displacement of wintering big game and eagles. Big game use in adjacent areas may be limited
if activity is present on the site on a daily basis. Winter operations will limit use by big game and
eagles.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations:
Recamation should be on-going with no more than approximately five to six acres disturbed at any
one time. Slopes, at a minimum, should be left at a 3:1 grade. The site should be revegetated
immediately with native grasses, (orbs and shrubs to prevent the invasion of noxious weeds -- a
major concern in Colorado. Cottonwood trees need to be replaced on a 5:1 (saplings:mature tree)
basis with every mature cottonwood tree removed from the site. Some mature cottonwoods should
remain in the adjacent areas for eagles to roost or perch in. Gravel pit slopes should provide
undulating shorelines and topographical relief to promote emergent vegetation. The operator should
make all reasonable attempts to minimize activity on the site during the winter (November 15 to April
15) as mule deer and elk use the area for winter range. Any necessary activities that can be
performed on a time schedule during this winter period should be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Prepared By: Title:
Glen Eyre
Melody Miller
Date:
08-22-95
District Wildlife Manager
Habitat Biologist
