Nitrogen oxide in the presence of sunlight and oxygen reacts over a period of time to form a
secondary compound of nitrogen dioxide, ayellow/brown gas.
4. For comparison, an average [ruck emits approximately ahalf--pound of NOx per tank of gas, a
residential hot water boiler emits approximately a quarter pound of NOx per day and residential
furnace emits approximately a 1.5 pounds of NOx per day.
5. The blasting activities at Lorencito Coal Co. do emit a variety of air pollutants into the atmosphere
that could pose a health risk. However, based upon the location of the blasting relative to
populated azeas and the dispersion and dilution of emissions produced, by the time these pollutants
reach the general population, they are well below hazardous levels.
6. Additionally, there aze sources of NOx much closer to the Primero school that may pose more of
an adverse health impact e.g. vehicle emissions from the highway, heating equipment in the school
and adjacent homes, and vehicle traffic to and from school.
7. Overall, the nitrogen oxide emissions produced by the blasting activities at Lorencito Coal Co.
should not pose a specific health risk to the residents adjacent the mine property,
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Thank you,
~~~
haul Carr
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
Air Pollution Control Division, Stationary Source Divisiai
Office (303) 692-3250
Fax (303) 782-0278
Mail APCD-SS-B1
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80246-1530
Cc.
Robert Jorgenson
Ron Leef
