This assessment addresses impacts to 4,956 acres, within Federal coal <br />lease C-37210, that are proposed to be added to the previously approved <br />Orchard Valley mine mining plan and as additional 763 acres that is <br />outside of Federal coal lease C-37210, but withia the State permit area. <br />The additional area proposed to be affected, if CWI's proposal is <br />approved, is 5,720 acres. This area is shows in Figure 1. The total <br />area within the proposed life-of-miae permit area is 8,048 acres sad the <br />total area withia the proposed mining play area would be 6,602 acres. <br />Impacts to the entire 4,999 acres within Federal coal lease C-37210 was <br />iacluded within the 1983, Bureau of Laced Haaagement (BLM) fiaal EIS <br />entitled "Uinta-Southwest Dtah Coal Region - Round Two". <br />The Orchard Valley mine is situated in the northeastern portion of Delta <br />County, Colorado and is located approximately one mile north of Paonia, <br />Colorado, along the Steven's Gulch Road. The western extremities of the <br />Orchard Valley mine permit area are bounded closely by the East sad West <br />Roatcap Creek drainage divide, and the northern boundary is located at <br />approximately the Horreli Cow Camp area. The location of the satire <br />Orchard Valley permit area can be found oa Figure 1. <br />Solis within those portions of the permit area which have been or will be <br />disturbed by surface operations and facilities are generally deep, <br />well-drained, sad vary widely in slope. Topsoil layers are shallow, <br />ranging from about 2 inches to 8 inches, surface textures are generally <br />looms or clay looms with subsoils ranging from clay looms to clays. <br />Basaltic cobbles and stones are common throughout the profiles of most <br />soils. <br /> <br />• <br />2 <br />
