III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
SNOWMASS COAL COMPANY
Mine OIlice:
Denver Ollice:
February 21, 1983
Mr. Robert Liddle
Mined Land Reclamation
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Room 423
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Status of North Thompson Creek Mines
Dear Mr. Liddle:
P.O. Box 980
Carbondale, Colorado 81623
(303) 963-3440
Suite 2300
410 Seventeenth Street
Denver, Colorado 80202
(303) 825-1966
RECEIVED
FEB 2 41983
A91ffD LAND REU.AMATION
COLA DEPj, OF NATURAL RESOURCES
By your request, this letter is written to you to update MLR on the status
of the North Thompson Creek Mines operated by Snowmass Coal Company.
On February 18, 1983, Snowmass Coal Company laid-off 23 hourly employees.
The longwall operating in Number 1 mine has been idled for an indefinite period
of time. However, development mining is continuing in our slopes on a three
shift per day basis. Our total work force now numbers 55 hourly and salary
employees.
The slowdown of coal production is due to the fact that we have been un-
able to secure a contract to sell our coal. We cannot anticipate when the
longwall will be operational because startup will only begin when we have
found a buyer for our product.
All aspects of environmental monitoring; backfilling, regrading, reveg-
etation, etc., will continue as they have in the past and as outlined in our
current permit to mine coal, and our new permit application to conduct coal
mining in Colorado.
The status of Number 3 mine remains as outlined in my letter "Temporary
Cessation of Operations for North Thompson Creek Mine Number 3", which I sent
to you in January, 1983.
If the Division requires more information or clarification of the status
of North Thompson Creek Mines, please feel free to call me at the mine office.
Sincerely,
.~~~.~-
Scott Jones
Environmental Coordinator
SJ:mgc
