Walters: <br />As we discussed in a phone conversation on August 2, 1983, I am writing <br />this letter to clarify the present status of stipulation No. 6 on both <br />the Munger Canyon and McClane Canyon permits. <br />The samples of disturbed soil material taken from the Munger and McClane <br />henches were composite samples taken over a depth of four feet. The <br />analysis indicates slightly elevated SAR levels at both sites, an <br />elevated salt level at Mr.Clane Canyon, and a very high pH at Munger <br />fanyon. None of these levels would create a problem during reclamation <br />1f proper cultural treatments are used. However, it is not evident <br />whether one distinct layer may be elevating these levels or whether these <br />chemical charal:terisitcs are uniform throughout the four foot sampling <br />depth. <br />In general, the surface layer is the zone where any degredation of soil <br />characteristics occurs on a mining operation through such things as <br />deposition of coal, watering for dust suppression, and deposition of <br />salts leached from nearby coal slockptles. If the surface layer has been <br />degraded by surface activities, this layer can easily be isolated during <br />regrading. <br />To determine whether the surface layer of the McClane and Munger Mine <br />benches have been degraded by surface operations, and to determine <br />whether high levelr, in the surface layer elevated the salt, SAR, and pH <br />levels of the four foot composite samples, Salt Creek must analyze a <br />surface sample from each site. Each sample should be taken to a six inch <br />depth. To maximize the lnfornlation gatftered, the sample analyzed from <br />each site should be a composite from several locations on each bench. <br />These samples only need to be analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity <br />and sodium absoption ratio. <br />423 Centennial Bwldin~, 733 Sherman Street Denver.
