- Mr. Byron Walker
PROPOSED BASELINE HYDROLOGIC SAMPLING LOCATIONS FOR
SOUTH TAYLOR AREA
May 25, 1999
Page 3
Ground Water Sites
The baseline grotmd water sampling program is limited to alluvial sites adjacent to the surface water sites.
Colowyo proposes [o sample field pazameters monthly and perform full suite analyses quarterly. Bedrock
monitoring is not proposed. There is no beneficial use of the Williams Fork formation and associated coals in the
area. Local ranchers use surface water or alluvial wells. Exposed ground water at the mine is derived from
perched zones formed by localized sandstone channels. Drill hole logs of the recoverable stratigraphic column
show multiple clay seams. The Trout Creek sandstone is a regional aquifer, but it is located over 200 feet below
the lowest coal to be mined, the I -Coal. In addition, a known bentonitic bed, known as the KM seam, is located
between [he I seam and the Trout Creek sandstone, precluding migration or commingling of waters between [he
mine and the aquifer.
Table 4: Proposed Baseline Alluvial Water Sites, Taylor Creek Expansion
Upstream Downstream
West Fork Taylor Creek N.A., Headwaters MW-95-O1 (historic)
MW-95-0I (future)
West Fork Good Spring Creek A-9 29L/A2-C (historic)
A-10 (future)
Good Spring Creek A-6 (current) NGSW (current)
Sites identified in bold print are new locations for sampling.
The Map 37, Water Monitoring Sites for Permit No. CO-O19-81 is enclosed for your review and contains both the
current monitoring sites and the proposed sites. Historic sampling sites are also identified.
The southern portion of Map 10, Hydrology, includes the springs and seeps and is enclosed for your review. The
proposed sampling sites have been identified in green. Historic sampling sites aze also identified in pink.
We look forward [o heazing from you. Thank-you, in advance, for your work on this project.
Sincerely,
Kimberley A. Wolf
Attachments
cc MH Gibson
SR Hinkemeyer
C Begej - Greystone
