They've complained about the number of
trucks driving through the area, dust from the mine and
the scars themselves.
"If it's an honorable plan, and can have a positive impact
visually ... and there isn't some hidden agenda, people
here would be in favor of anything that would help the
scar," said Kerri Olivier, a member of the Mountain
Shadows Community Association who lives near the
quarry.
One hitch could be the foundation's desire to blast about
10 acres of adjacent U.S. Forest Service land. Reaves
said it needs to be reshaped as part of the larger
reclamation effort.
Tim Grantham, a forester with the agency, said that may
require time-consuming environmental studies. He said
the agency wants to work with the foundation but wants
to see public support first.
State mining laws require the quarry's owner, Castle
Concrete, to reclaim the land. But such laws don't go far
enough to make mining scars disappear.
Similar mining scars on local foothills gave rise in 1991 to
the foundation, which is dedicated to improving the
aesthetics of the scars above and beyond what state laws
require.
a Freedom Communications, Inc.
