~~
III IIIIII III IIII III STATE OF COLORADO RICHARD D. LA• Gov c.n n.
999
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Harris D. Sherman. Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
723 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street
Denver. Colorado 60203 Tel. (303) 892-3567
C. C. McCall,
Administrator
M E M O R A N D U M
T0: Mined Land Reclamation Board
FROM: Mined Land Reclamation Staff -Randy Qverton
DATE: November 30, 1977
RE: Hazeltine Investment Association, Inc.
As you remember, consideration of Hazeltine was continued from the last
Board meeting (Nov. 22-23) to the Dec. 15 meeting; the subject of
discussion is to be limited to water quality resulting from the operation.
The general concerns expressed were that the creation of a series of
lakes could result in the contamination of ground water by water infiltrating
from the South Platte River to the lakes, and then to the ground water
system. The possibility of deep wells for domestic supplies was also
discussed.
In considering the problem I contacted a number of individuals in the
Division of Water Resources, Dept. of Health, Statewide 208 Program, and
the Denver Regional Council of Governments. What follows is a brief
discussion of what I learned and conclusions made about Hazeltine's
effect on ground water quality surrounding their operation.
Deep Soft Water Wells -
Water from these wells comes from the Arapahoe formation. The formation
is wide ranging and general in nature; locating water in this formation
is not difficult. The Division of Water Resources says that in the
Henderson area, new irrigation wells are not being permitted, but there
is no limit or anticipated future limitations on new domestic wells
completed in the Arapahoe formation. Below the Arapahoe formation are
the Larimie Shale, the Fox Hills Sandstone, and then the Pierre Shale.
Water can also be obtained from the Fox Hills Sandstone.
Quality of the South Platte River vs. Alluvial Ground Water -
Nutrients and coliforms in the South Platte River at Henderson are
considered the major contaminate. Phosphate (P04) shows high levels
