October 2, 1989 FENCE POST 43 <br />Photos by Roy Karp <br />quality grazing was hazd to find. During August and <br />September cattle were pastured on the reclamation at <br />Seneca mine. The 302 acre dry-land pasture supported <br />340 head of yearling heifers for 45 days. A range study <br />by an independent consultant showed 39 percent <br />utilization on the reclaimed pasture, after the yeazlings <br />were taken out. <br />The studies indicate that reclaimed surface-mined <br />land provides excellent livestock grazing and wildlife <br />habitat when compared to surrounding native pastures. <br />It is possible to have coal for electricity and return the <br />mined land to production of valuable range. <br />(Editor's note: Roy Kara is a Reclamation Specialist with <br />Peabody Coal Co.1 <br />Centennial uses ultra-sound <br />By John Walker <br />Beginning in about 2 weeks, Centennial Livestock <br />Auction will be offering ultra-sound pregnancy testing <br />to selleis of breeding age ewes. <br />Centennial Livestock owner Wayne Kruse said the <br />ultra-sound tests, which can detect pregnancies with a <br />near 100 percent success rate forty of more days after <br />breeding a ewe, should make buyers of the ewes more <br />comfortable with their purchases, and generate more in- <br />come for the se8ers. Testing h2s been done in some <br />parts of the country for about a year, and Centennial is <br />the first livestock auction company in this area to offer <br />the service. <br />The program will be administered by Dr. Rainey <br />Corbyn, a CSU veterinary school graduate with a <br />private practice in Ft. Collins.
