<br />~II ~I~I~~~I~~~~~ ~I~ <br />sss <br />March 9, 1943 <br />Mr. Dennis DeVore <br />Colorado State lands Board <br />1313 Sherman Sveet <br />Room 620 <br />Denver, CO 80201 <br />RE Request for Use of Vegetation Re(ereoce Area for Kaiser's Colorado Coal Mine No. 1 -(Permit C-SI- <br />024) <br />Dear Mr. DeVore, _ <br />On behalf of Kaiser Steel Resources, we would like to request use of a small portion of state land in <br />the northeast quarter of Section 36, Township 27 South, Range 67 West Cor a vegetation reference area for <br />[he mine. The site is located appro~dmately four miles nonh of Walsenburg, Colorado. The attached map <br />indicates the area of interest. No funher mining is planned for this site and all pazt mining activity haz been <br />reclaimed. The reference area waz selected a number of years ago and we would like to maintain the area (or <br />reference through final bond release which may not occur for another five to seven years. We would not <br />propose any change in the management o[ the area, however, the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology <br />would like a letter from you granting Kaiser access to the property az vegetation assessments are required. <br />These assessments would include evaluation of cover, species diversity, shrub density, and forage production <br />The only disturbance involved in these assessmenu would be clipping of several ooe-half meter plots to obtain <br />forage weights. <br />Should you have questions or if you need additional information concerning this request, please do <br />not hesitate to call me at (303) 859-0930 or Mr. Mike Keegan of Kaiser at (303) 731-5055.
