The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co.
~~~ t, '~~ I"i AChevron Company
~ -~~ ~ I 1161nvemess Drive Past, Suite 207, Englewood, CO 80112 • Phone 303 930 3600
July 13, 2006
Mr. Dan Hernandez
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St.. Rm. 219
Denver. CO 8021)3
RE: P&M Coal, Edna Mine, Permit No. C-80-001
Vegetation Monitoring Reference Area
Dear Mr. Hernandez,
RECEIVED
JU(~ 7 2006
DNision olklinerals 8 Geoioy~
I have inspected the damage to the sage/snowbeny reference area reported earlier this week. A
total of 15-20 acres was shredded including roughly 2/3rds of the 2 acre reference azea. The
flatter, more north facing slope was shredded but the steeper, more west facing slope was
untouched. I have included several photographs to show you the extent of the damage.
in 2005 there were 40 production samples taken in this reference area. Of those, 13 were taken in
the ur.-damaged area. I would like to propose sampling the un-damaged portion of the
sage/snuwberry .eference and the oak mountain shrub reference area just as we would be doing
if the damage did not occur. We would then determine. the change in cover and production for
each reference area from last year to this. If the changes are consistent hetween the two reference
areas then the un-damaged portion of the sage/snowberry area would be acceptable for continued
use as the reference.
I and a representative of Habitat Management, Inc. would like to meet with you and/or your staff
at [he earliest convenience to arrive at a plan which allows vegetatiop monitoringao occur this
year. I am unavailable on Thursday, July 20 but car, re-arrang a :y ether appointments to fit your
availability.
If you need an additional copy of the 2005 Vegetation Sampling Report (Byron Walker should
have one copy) or any other information, please let me know.
Sincerely, ~ ,
,Il .y, .
..
,... -_: ~: .,,$-.T: ... ~ ~i:: i :fin.
Steven:E:,L-each.; : •; . -
Sr. Environmental Engr.
• t ,T,
.. .. .~ ".. ,. ..
