2. American Kestrel - Bio~ndicator Studv - C.S.U.
Western Fuels-utah, Inc. is cooperating with Colorado State
University to study effects of carbaryl pesticide being used
adjacent to Dinosaur National Monument. This pesticide is being
used to control Mormon cricket (Anabrus Siigplex) infestations in
the park vicinity. Approximately 20 nest boxes have been placed
along the Deserado Mine's Coal Transportation Corridor, railroad
loop, and refuse area. American Kestrel (Falco Searverius) falcons
utilize these nest boxes during their breeding season. Information
collected during the study which was initiated in 1987, is being
used for documenting any pesticide contamination to raptorial birds
within the Dinosaur National Monument. This includes effects, if
any, on the endangered Peregrine Falcon (Falco Peregrinus).
The following photos were taken on June 18, 1993 at the
Deserado Mine.
