~ a •

starts (Table 3). Nesting success was the highest on the DNM
area compared to the other 3 sites for: percent of nests fledging
young, number of young hedged per successful nest, and number of
young fledged per nest attempt (Table 4). In all three
parameters this difference was not significant (P > 0.05)
compared to nests on the Front Range of Colorado or in Idaho but
differed from North Dakota nests (P < 0.05). Only young Kestrels
were banded in this area due to nest checks being made later in
the season; 52 birds were banded (24 females and 28 males).

Table 4. Nesting
productivity was good for the Idaho area with 2.7 young fledged
per Restrel nest attempt (Table 4), although this is slightly
below the 2.88 young fledged per nest attempt necessary for a
stable population (Henny 1972). Thirteen adult Kestrels (8
females and 5 males) and 73 young (42 females, 28 males and 3 of
unknown sex) were banded during the first year.
Food remains were visually checked in 22 Kestrel nests with
insects (grasshoppers and beetles) being found. in 82~ (Table 5).
The insect proportion of the contents ranged from 5 to 100$. The
next most commonly occuring food item was reptiles (50$); the
most common reptile was a species of Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma).
All but 1 of the nests with reptiles had the Horned Lizard
present and the other nest contained an unknown snake. These
estimations reflect food utilization for the entire nesting
6
