Colorado - Dinosaur National Honumant (DNM)
The application of carbaryl bait for Mormon cricket (Anabrus
simplex) control was conducted on or near cricket hatching sites
while the crickets were in early nymphal stages. A total of 1186
acres were treated with 5 percent carbaryl bait at a rate of 10
pounds per acre (O. Barham pers. comm.). Treatment plots varied
from 1 to 57 acres with 91 percent being less than 30 acres in
size (Table 2). Of the 96 nest boxes originally placed in this
area during 1987, 87 remained intact and in place for use during
the 1988 nesting season (Table 1). Eighteen Kestrel nests were
available for study of nest productivity. Only 1 Kestrel nest
was within 0.5 miles of an application plot. Therefore, no
comparisons can be made between treated and control areas for
Kestrel nesting success. Data on the overall breeding success of
the American Kestrel are presented. Thirty-eight Mountain
Bluebird nests were also found; but since boxes were checked only
near the end of the breeding season, data on exact number of eggs
laid and hatched, number of young fledged, and nest success are
not complete. Only 1 nest box with a Bluebird nest was within
0.3 miles of a cricket treatment plot. No new nest boxes were
set in this area.
Table 2 Sias of carbaryl bait appGwtion plots for Mormon ticket convol near Dinosaur National
Monument in Colorado during 1988.
Size of plots
(aaesl Number of plots Percent of total
0 - 9.9 81 653
10 - 19.9 22 17.8
24 -29.9 30 8.1
30 -399 6 4.8
40 - 49.9 2 1.6
50 -59.9 3 2.4
Idaho
No treatments for grasshopper control were made in the Idaho
IPM Demonstration Area during 1988. Again, data were collected
on the general breeding success of American Kestrels on the Snake
River Plateau in the Shoshone and Idaho Falls Districts of the
BIM. Of the original 100 nest boxes placed in the Demonstration
Area during 1987, 94 boxes remained available for avian species
at the beginning of the 1988 nesting season (Table 1). The
majority of the boxes were used by the European Starling and
secondly by the Kestrel; two boxes were not occupied. Eleven of
the 27 Kestrel nests were started in boxes that had no previous
nest attempt by other species; while 16 Kestrel nests were
present in boxes where Starlings had attempted to nest.
