APT Project CMX2453
Test Report, Kiln Stack Emissions (March 24, 2003)
Each sampling period consisted of extracting a gas sample from the stack under isokinetic
flow conditions fora 64-minute period. The gas passed through an in-stack glass nozzle, a
heated glass probe, aloes-residue, heated, quartz fiber filter, a series of five (5) chilled
glass impingers, and a calibrated dry gas meter. Stack gas velocity and volumetric flow
rate sampling consisted of conducting a temperature and differential pressure traverse of
the stack along the PM/HCI grid of sampling points using a K-type thermocouple and an S-
type pitot tube. A dry, integrated sample of stack gas was collected in a Tedlar bag.
Prior to sampling, the first two impingers each contained 100 ml of 0.1 N sulfuric acid
solution. The third and fourth impingers each contained 100 ml of 0.1 N NaOH. The fifth
impinger contained approximately 250 grams of dried silica gel.
Following each sampling period, the contents of the first two impingers were recovered for
subsequent IC analysis for chloride ions to determine the HCI content of the stack gas.
The contents of the third and fourth impingers were spiked with sodium thiosulfate (to
ensure complete conversion of the hypohalous ion to the halide ion) and recovered for
possible future IC analysis for chloride ion to determine the diatomic chlorine (Cls) content
of the stack gas. The contents of the Tedlar bag were analyzed for carbon dioxide and
oxygen content using an Orsat apparatus. The laboratory data were combined with field
data to calculate the PM and HCI emissions in units of parts per million, dry volume basis
corrected to 7% oxygen (ppmvd @ 7% OZ -for HCI only), pounds per hour (Ib/hr), and
pounds per ton of dry feed to the kiln (for PM only).
5.3.1. Supplemental QA/QC Procedures -HCI
As required by the method, a sample of unexposed impinger solutions was analyzed along
with the emission samples, Additionally, a true sample train blank was collected and
analyzed concurrent with the emissions samples. Field blank collection procedures were
identical to those detailed in Section 5.1.1 for PM /Metals.
5.4. Formaldehyde (HCHO~ and Acetaldehyde (CHaCHO)
Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde emissions were determined in accordance with Method
0011.
Each sampling period consisted of extracting a gas sample from the stack under isokinetic
flow conditions fora 64-minute period. The gas passed through an in-stack glass nozzle, a
heated glass probe, a series of four (4) chilled glass impingers, and a calibrated dry gas
meter. Stack gas velocity and volumetric flow rate sampling consisted of conducting a
temperature and differential pressure traverse of the stack along a grid of sampling points
using a K-type thermocouple and an S-type pitot tube.
page 17
