Lochhead
E aecutive Dueaor
M¢hael B. Long
Division Director
This letter is written as follow-up to our meetings of June 11, 1996 and June 12, 1996. During
the afternoon of June 11, 1996, Mike Boulay (DMG) and I met with Larry Mautz at the Mautz
residence to discuss Mautz' concerns regarding the West Elk Mine operation. Also, on
June 12, 1996, Mike Boulay and I visited the Mautz cabin with Norm Avery (MCC) and
Elaine Mautz.
It is our understanding that, at this time, your primary concern is regarding damage to the cabin,
and the possible relationship between the damage and subsidence resulting from the mining
activities at the West Elk Mine. During the visit to the cabin, Elaine Mautz showed us the areas
of concern, and these included such features as foundation cracking, drywall cracking, gaps
between the flour slab and the foundation, and doors which do not function properly. Mrs. Mautz
indicated that certain repairs previously implemented by Mountain Coal Company require additional
work.
During our meeting of June 12, 1996, we agreed that a letter would be provided by the Mautz' to
DMG which details those areas of damage which the Mautz' believe occurred as a result of
subsidence, and which should be repaired by MCC. Please provide your detailed damage
itemization as soon as possible so that we may pursue a resolution to [his matter.
We look forward to your response and please call, if you have questions.
Sincerely,
.,
~: '
d A.
