O;pi. of i!a[ursl Resources
In accordance with Rule 4.30.1, Grand Mesa Coal Company wishes
to notify you of a temporary cessation of operations at its Red
Canyon #1 Mine. The cause of this cessation is the depressed coal
market and the term is unknown.
The extent of affected area on the surface and underground is
current in recent permit application submissions.
Being an underground operation, surface operations will remain
the same or enlarge, not requiring reclamation until the end of the
life of the operation. The only final reclamation in progress is
5.25 acres seeded in the spring of 1984 at the loadout facility in
Delta. Temporary stabilization has taken place in portions of the
mine site.
Minor surface operations will continue. Stockpiled coal may
be moved according to sales. Underground development waste disposal
may continue to accommodate stockpile waste and Blue Ribbon waste.
Environmental monitoring will continue as it has been, with the
possible exception of underground monitoring. The portals will not
be sealed, but may be secured to limit access.
Grand Mesa Goal Company wishes to continue in a timely fashion
with its permit application. Barring any major surprise requirements,
we plan to cooperate with the final steps in the permit review and
approval.
In our temporary cessation plans, personnel are not scheduled
to be on site on a daily basis. To assure that mine personnel are
on site for inspections, prior arrangements can be made by calling
