Background
The Bowie No. 2 underground coal mine is located in Delta County, Colorado. The mine
has been in operation since 1997. The life of the currently approved mining operations
within the approved permit area is estimated to be 9 months. The mining operations use
industry standard longwall mining methods. The average annual production rate is at the
approved maximum production rate of 5.0 million tons per year from the D-2 coal seam.
The mining plan for Federal lease COC-61209 at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was initially
approved on October 18, 2000. Since that approval, there has been one mining plan
modification for Federal lease COC-61209 that was approved on May 11, 2001.
The State's current permit area covers 4,525 acres.
Approximately 1 13 surface acres are disturbed within the S[a[e's permit area.
A total of 2,638 acres of Federal coal exist within the State's current permit area.
• A total of 8.6 million tons of Federal coal exist within the current permit area.
A total of 2,123 acres of Federal surface land exist within the State's current permit area.
The postmining land use within the currently approved mining plan area is rangeland and
wildlife habitat.
III. The Proposed Action
This mining plan action consists of a mining plan modification for Federal lease COC-
61209. Specifically, the mining plan action proposed by Bowie Resources LTD consists
of:
extend mining and coal recovery from the D-2 coal seam, throughout the
remainder of the Iron Point Tract Federal coal lease COC-61209, within the area
covered by Colorado State permit C-96-083, in all or part of Sections 4, 5, 8, and
9, T13S, R91W 6'h P.M.
The life of the mining operations is expected to continue for 5 years under Colorado
Permit No. C-96-083 and this proposed mining plan modification.
The average annual production rate and the maximum production rate would not change.
