COAL VIES) GHOST RANCH
So named because of a Ghost (or Ghosts) which we saw one dark night
years ago. It xas a clear dark night at about 1966 that the Ghost first
made itself known to us. Allis and I were standing on the north bank of
the Yampa River and xe saw a light appear near the cld house across the
river. It started dancing slowly from side to side and up and down as
it moved sloxly toxard us. The volley ball sized light xas as a dim
sparkler flashing on and off as it moved over the xater, staying 3' above
it. The light turned up river, when it reached the center, finally disap-
pearing from view.
We stood on the bank a few minutes longer contemplating the light.
I surmised that it could be car lights on US 40, reflecting from rocks
on the cliffs. Allis of course pointed out that there were no cars. As
xe xalked sloxly back about 50' xe stopped to look at the stars and con-
sidered the light. A fex moments later xe noticed it coming back down
the river. When the flashing, bobbing, xeaving light reached the point
xhere it had turned before, it turned and came toxards us again. Nox
Allis is not a fast runner, but had I started running toxard our trailer,
I'm sure I'd have lost the race. We both stood our ground, why?
Probably because xe couldn't move. Anyway the dancing dim flashing light
reached the river bank rising as it did so. We still stood our ground.
As it moved toxard us xe tried to see xhat it was. We sax no form of
any kind, only a dim sparkler-like light flashing on and off. When the
light got xithin about 20' of us, it turned and xent up the trail, disap-
pearing from our view.
Allis sax the Ghost (ar xhatever) again several years later 1~2 mile
doxn river on the old abandoned US 40 road. The Ghnst acted the same
xay. It scared our dog Daisey xho ran under the trailer. Allis tried
to see more of the Ghost by running to get a flashlight (she said), but
the batteries xould not xork. Some excuse:
The Ghost xas again seen this past swmner (1988) by Ron and Laura
Stevenson, persons who are living in a trailer pa*ked next to the last
house on Old Bear River. Oh yes, the Ghost Town of Coal Viex is appro~d-
mately 1 1~2 miles up the canyon xhere Allis and I first saw the Ghost.
If anyone desires to knox more or has any theories on the Ghost of
Coal Viex Ranch, please xrite or call, For stcry about the "Performing
Bear of Coal Viex" send $1.00,
John A.
