Wirtz, II, 1'h.ll.
Date: 3 November 1975
Subject: Potential di::Uirbance oC pcrcf;rinc falcon at or near ncsC sites:
c ommen CS on cLiscuss ion with Dr. Tom J. Cade, Cornell University.
Dr. Cadr_ notes that the response of individual pairs Co di.sCUrbancc ucar
[he eyrie varies wiCh Coposraphy aC the site and the temperament of Uie. indi-
vidual birds. It is gennra.ll.y accepted [hat a one-ha1E mile buffer zone is
minimal and that one mile is an accepCable buffer zone around an active eyrie.
Dr..Cade feels thaC to:o miles, without any human traffic [on foot or
vehicle] closer Co the eyrie should not disturb a breeding pair. he points
out, hoiacver, that while the 1975 nesting site 'is known, there.. is the danger
[hat an alternate site is closer to the proposed clump site. Thus the eyrie
location should be ascertained for several years before initiating dumping.
Conclusions:
Dumping at the head of Smith will probably not disturb nesting peregrines
at the site indicaCed for 1975. however, there is the possibility Chat they
have an alternate site closer to the proposed clump area. Continued seasonal
observation for peregrine nesting activities at the site seems appropriate
while conCinuino plans for a dump at the bead of Smith.
