•
'Introduction
Summary of Water Information
• The proposed mining operation will have some affect on sur-
face and ground water systems, but all such effects are neg-
ligible and in conformance with applicable law. There are
four potential areas of concern in terms of possible ground
• water effects caused by the mining operation; consumptive
use of water during mining~or operating the crusher and for
dust suppression; water for revegetation and the proposed
afteruse; and surface drainage (historic and proposed);'ana pollution
~ Attached are reports giving more complete information on
water for mining, water for revegetation and afteruse, drain-
age, and other related items. In addition, a general dis-
cussion of water resources is included in this section.
~ Existing Water Resources and Conditions
Sandy Acres is located 1 mile east of the South Platte River.
There are no wells, dams, reservoirs, or natural waterways on
'• the property. Two small irrigation ditches cross this proper-
ty; one on the south which serves this property, and one along
132nd on the north edge which serves the property to the north.
Both ditches will not be disturbed by mining.
~ There are several sources of water in the area. First, there
is immediate sub-surface water which is considered tributary
to the South Platte River system. According to the soil cores
this water was encountered approximately 20 feet below the sur- '
~ face. Substantially deeper under the property are two non-
tributary bedrock aquifers. Water availability from these aqui-
fers is governed by provisions of SB213(1973). This law limits
the amount of water that can be withdrawn from either aquifer
~ to 1% of the water stored in the aquifer underlying the surface
land. Water availability is determined by the formula "area times
saturated thickness times specific yield divided by 100 years".
Available water is also reduced if pre-1973 wells have already
~ appropriated water underlying the property.
The property is presently farmed using alluvial adjudicated
water supplied from the Fulton Ditch and an adjacent irrigation
well. This farming will continue until mining commencies and
~ during mining on unexcavated property.
I•
•
