BHA
GROUND CONTROL PLAN
PER 30 CFR 77.1000
AS AMENDED MAY 20, 1993
Mine Name: COLOWYO MINE
Identification Number: 05-02962
Mine Location: Parts of Sections 2, 3, 4, 9, S0, li, 15 and
16, T3N, R93W, 6th P.M., Moffat County,
Colorado, approximately 28 miles southwest of
Craig, Colorado, west of Highway #13, and 21
miles north/northeast of Meeker, Colorado.
Company: COLOWYO COAL COMPANY
5731 State Highway 13
Meeker, Colorado 81641
General Characteristics of the Strata:
Coal is mined from a stratigraphic sequence of Upper
Cretaceous rocks which are in the lower part of the Williams Fork
formation of the Mesa Verde group. The examination of logs and
drill cores from Colowyo's drilling program indicates that the
formation consists of interbedded very light to light gray
sandstones, with well sorted, firmly cemented, fine to medium
grains. The individual beds vary from a few inches to several feet
in thickness, and are usually thinly crossbedded or laminated with
darker materials. The finer grained rocks range from highly
indurated medium gray siltstone to dark gray carbonaceous claystone
and shale. Some brackish water fossils were found in the shale
toward the bottom of the section.
Prominent jointing in the sandstone is visible on most of the
outcrops and where exposed in the pit. The strikes of the major
joint sets are usually closely parallel to and/or normal to the
1
