%Kennecott
~ .Energy
RECEIVED
MAR 1 12005
March 4, 2005
Giyisisa ~f Minerela end Geology
To All Contractors Providing Services to Kennecott Energy Co:
,,
<~~
_~~ ~~~'
„~,a~a
,,'~~,r
.~
We aze in the process of registering the Kennecott Energy Co. (KEC) Environmental
Management System under ISO-14001 standazds. ISO-14001 is a specific set of
standards developed by an international standards organization for environmental
management systems.
The ISO-14001 standards were updated in December 2004, and the standard now
requires that: "The organization shall ensure that any person(s) performing tasks for
it or on its behalf that have the potential to cause a significant environmental
impact(s) identified by the organization is (are) competent on the basis of
appropriate education, training or experience, and shall retain associated records."
That new requirement is the purpose of this letter. To meet that requirement, Kennecott
Energy Co. needs to ensure that our contractors meet those provisions. The potential to
cause a significant environmental impact represents environmental risks of activities,
with the risks ameliorated by administrative procedures or physical controls.
Potential significant environmental impact categories encompass air emissions
(especially dust), blasting emissions, handling and potential spills of hydrocarbons or
chemicals, topsoil loss or erosion, creation of sediment, handling and disposal of
chemicals, freshwater consumption, energy use and potential wildlife impacts. Please
take a few minutes to consider the services your company performs and the related
actions taken while operating on KEC sites. It is the responsibility of each contractor to
ensure that their programs can and will meet the requirement quoted above.
Compliance with the quoted requirement relate to demonstration that any of your
employees involved in activities on KEC properties understand the environmental risks
related to their activities, the applicable operational controls, and any pertinent
contingency measures to reduce the impact of any environmental incident. Those
employees also need a working familiarity with key concepts of the KEC environmental
policies.
Antelope Mine • Colowyo Mine • Cordero Rolo Mine • Jacobs Ranch Mine • Spring Creek Mine
Kennecott Energy Company
505 South Gillette Avenue (82776)
Post Office Bax 3009
Gillette, Wyoming 82717-3009
Phone.
