SUNLIGHT MINE (C-81-046):
This revokation site was reclaimed by the Division during June, 1990.
All available bond monies were spent during the initial construction,
however s significant amount of additional work remains to be done
before the site can be considered reclaimed to the standards set
forth in the permit. Remaining tasks consist of:
* Regrading the steep refuse pile/mine bench outslope supported by
timber cribbing;
~ Removing all remaining mine area structures, materials & debris;
* Revegetating disturbed areas (this may involve importing topsoil
or incorporating soil amendments into the regraded material);
* Removing the mine drainage control system, including the upper
diversion ditch and sediment pond;
~ Sealing the partially open portal entry situated near the East
end of the upper mine bench. This may be a pre-law feature,
however the opening is probably within the permit area boundary.
Paul Krabacher in AML may have some information on whether AML has any
plans to seal up the old pre-law portal opening and maybe do some extra
regrading & seeding work on the site in the near future.
One additional item worth mentioning involves the intermittant mine
water drainage from the lower ventilation portal. Because a water right
exists on all drainage from this entry, it is essential that outflows
from the portal not be restricted or cut-off. The mine seal installed
by the Division hae been designed to allow free drainage from the entry,
and the seal should be inspected on a regular basis to ensure that the
drain pipes are clear and capable of passing flows through the seal.
HAWK'S NEST MINE (C-81-016):
This operation has 5 basic areas of disturbance, each being in
a different state of reclamation as described below:
EAST MINE AREA -
Initial reclamation (demolition & grading) was completed during the Fall
of 1991. Seeding work was completed in May, 1992. The site has had
erosional problems which hopefully have been mitigated by the recent
(May '92) installation of contour furrows, berms, and hay bale dikes.
Additionally, the lack of available topsoil material has resulted in
only marginal first-year seeding success despite a wet growing season.
This situation merits some attention from the staff range scientists to
determine the best (and most cost effective) course of action, i.e.
should we wait another season, go ahead & reseed, or import topsoil and
then reseed. As importing any significant quantities of topsoil will
most likely use up the bulk of the remaining bond monies, it will be
