(Daily Press Photo by <br />Sean Jackson) <br />a~.ra <br />By SEAN JACKSON <br />Assistant F,ditor <br />NUCLA -The New Horizon Mine <br />was dedicated with a bang yesterday, <br />as abum 150 people watched Nucla <br />Mayor John Vanderpool set off a <br />small explosive charge. <br />The srip coal mine borders the <br />town's weslem limits. The mine is <br />owned and operated by Western <br />Fuels-Colorado, which is 99 percent <br />owned by Tri-Stale Generation and <br />Transmission Association. <br />Between 29,000 and 33,000 Ions of <br />coal a month are expected to be ex- <br />tracled from the mine, providing fuel <br />for Tri-State's Nucla Power Station. <br />Coal production is scheduled W start <br />July 6. <br />When fully operational, the mine <br />will supply as many as 60 iraclor- <br />trailer Inrck loads of coal to the power <br />plan! every 16 hour work day. Lath <br />Imck hauls 25 tons of coal. <br />The mine is located on property <br />purchased from Peabody Coal. Land <br />is also leased from various local land <br />owners, including San Miguel Power <br />Associnliat. <br />OlTieials from Tri-State, Westem <br />Fuels-Colorado, San Miguel Power, <br />Montrose County, Nucla. and a rep- <br />resentative from Rep. Scot! Mclnnis's <br />office were present at the opening <br />ceremonies. <br />"The mine is on time and the mine <br />is on budget, and we're proud of Ihat," <br />said Fred Palmer, chicFcxccutive of <br />titer of Westem Fuels.
