N ~5 <br />to move, <br />Cyprus says <br />Denver mining firm <br />is undecided about <br />relocating to Phoenix <br />By Ridutd ~Illamson <br />News Staff Wn~ter <br />Denver-based Cyprus Amax <br />Minerals Co., the nation's lazgest <br />mining company until last year, is <br />considering a move to the Phoenix <br />azea but has made no decision, a <br />top executive said <br />Tuesday, <br />The company is <br />working to sell off its <br />coal mines, including <br />the Twen[ymile Mine <br />in Colorado, a process <br />that will take "months <br />and months," said <br />Chief Financial Officer Gerald J. <br />Malys. Any decision to move the <br />headquarters would have to come <br />after that, he said. <br />"Clearly, we have not made any <br />decision to move to Phoenix," Ma- <br />lys said. "We have offices in Phoe- <br />nix and Denver and we have talked <br />about should they be combined, <br />like should we move Denver to <br />Phoenix or Phoenix to Denver, but <br />no decision has been trade: ' <br />"There's no question there aze <br />rumors," Malys said. "We've <br />made a change in that the head of <br />exploration is moving to Tempe, <br />Ariz. But there certainly is no plan <br />for us [o be moving companies: ' <br />A move to Arizona would make <br />sense after Cyprus becomes pri- <br />marily acopper and <br />molybdenum produc- <br />er, industry experts <br />said. Arizona is the <br />major copper pro- <br />ducing state and <br />home to industry <br />giant Phelps Dodge. <br />Cyprus Chairman <br />Milt Wazd could even be consider- <br />ing amerger with another copper <br />company, said Ted Worthington, <br />Denver bureau chief of the North- <br />ern Miner trade journal. <br />See STOItAGETEK on 8B <br />
